Burdine Homm

Obituary of Burdine A. Homm

Burdine Ann (Richards) Homm was born August 25, 1926, at home in Burlington, CO. She returned safely home on October 17, 2021. Burdine was the 4th child of John and Mayme (Anderson) Richards. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1944 and taught school at Ritzius 48J for a number of years. On February 3, 1945, Burdine married Howard Homm in Wray, CO; the couple made their home on the ranch north of Burlington. Howard and Burdine welcomed 4 children, Larry, John, Richard and ZuAnn. Besides working the ranch alongside Howard and raising her family, Burdine was active at Immanuel Lutheran Church Ladies Auxiliary, Kit Carson County Cattleman’s Association Cow Belles, and both state and national Hereford Associations. She held numerous offices in these organizations making lifelong friends across the state and country. She was a staunch supporter of Hereford cattle and spent 50+ years alongside her family at the National Western Stock Show raising and showing Hereford cattle. Always the storyteller, Burdine together with Howard authored several books about eastern Colorado history and Hereford cattle. Our Pioneer Heritage detailed the history of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and its congregation and led Burdine on an adventure to save the original cemetery from the old sod church. She and a team of family and friends worked to restore the cemetery grounds as well as making the case for the cemetery to be installed on the state register. The Hereford Heritage book outlined the history of cattle ranchers across Colorado and came with its own adventure traveling the state and compiling stories from the ranchers themselves. Burdine traded one adventure for another in time spent with her grandkids and great grandkids. She and Howard often enthusiastically volunteered to stay at home with the kids while their parents were out. The great grandkids even gave her a name that she treasured, “Grandma Great”! Burdine was so proud of every one of her family and was happiest when the house was filled with 10 grandchildren and eventually 17 great grandchildren. She could often be found teaching “the kids” all kinds of mischief. Burdine was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mayme (Anderson) Richards; sister, Elva Powell; brothers, David, Harry, and Robert Richards; son, John Homm; daughter-in-law, Diane Homm; and husband of 64 years, Howard. She is survived by son, Larry Homm and wife, Dee of Burlington, CO; son, Richard Homm of Oakley, KS; daughter, ZuAnn Tuell and husband, Ross of Wray, CO; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends. She will be greatly missed. Memorials may be made to Kit Carson County Ambulance Service or to the Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in Burdine’s name and may be left at or sent to Love Funeral Home, 377 15th Street, Burlington, Colorado 80807.
