Obituary of John Williams

John “Jackâ€? Thomas Williams, age 85, of Hugo, Colorado passed away Friday, September 16, 2005 in Hugo, Colorado. Jack was born October 16, 1919 in Kanarado, Kansas to Mertin T. and Alta (Straun) Williams. Jack graduated from Hugo High School in 1939. While attending high school in Hugo, he was recognized as a part of the All-Star Football, Basketball and Track Teams. After graduation, Jack was offered a full ride scholarship to Kansas State University but did not accept the offer. On June 8, 1940 Jack married his high school sweetheart Winifred Schneider in Hugo, Colorado. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Tennessee where Jack worked for the Dupont Powder Plant. In 1941, they relocated to Denver, Colorado where he worked for Remington Arms, a branch of Dupont. In 1942 Jack and Winifred moved to Richland, Washington were Jack was a Pump Crete Forman for Dupont building the Atomic Bomb Plant and not knowing what it was. Jack enlisted in the United States Army on September 9, 1944, serving his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 10, 1946. Following the war, Jack went to work for AT & T Company in Denver and in 1956 transferred to US West Telephone in Colorado Springs. Upon his retirement in 1977, Jack and Winifred moved back to Hugo, Colorado. Jack was a member of the Hugo United Methodist Church and the Joe Will VFW Post in Hugo and Pioneers Retirement Group with U.S. West. Jack loved to fish, play cribbage, duck hunt, and was a big Bronco Fan. He also enjoyed restoring a Model A. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Mert; and two sisters, Diva and Dorothy. Jack is survived by his wife Winifred of Hugo, CO; one daughter, JacquaLee and her husband Jack Swennes of Matheson, CO; three grandsons, Heath (Karrie) Swennes and their children Allie and Hayden of Sterling, CO, Dane (Brandy) Swennes and their children Taylor and Zachary of Colorado Springs, CO, and Bret (Sammi) Swennes and their children John Thomas and William of Ramah, CO. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Monday, September 19, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. at the Hugo United Methodist Church in Hugo, CO with Rev. Olga Hard officiating. Burial with Military Honors following immediately at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hugo, Colorado Memorials are suggested to the Hugo Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 11, Hugo, CO 80821.
