Obituary of Ethel Pieper

Longtime Burlington, Colorado resident Ethel Amanda Witzel Pieper passed away April 12, 2006 at the Grace Manor Care Center in Burlington. She was 102 years old. Ethel was born on June 11, 1903 in Westpoint, Nebraska to Roy and Susan (Gaster) Ellis. She was one of four children. Ethel attended school up through the eighth grade. On January 4, 1922, Ethel married Fredrick Herman Albert Witzel in Gurley, Nebraska. To this union six children were born; Myrtle Louise, Darlene, Marcella, Wayne, Fred and Darrel. Ethel was a member of the 1st St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Ethel’s first husband passed away in 1961. She later married Leonard Pieper; he also preceded her in death in 1988. She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, three daughters Myrtle Louise Witzel, Darlene Witzel and Marcella Lempp; two sisters and one brother. She is survived by three sons Wayne and Fred Witzel of Burlington, CO and Darrel Witzel of Colby, KS. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and sixteen great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including her oldest nephew Floyd Wegner and wife Betty of Goodland. Funeral Services for Mrs. Pieper were held on Monday, April 17, 2006 at 2:00 PM at the Love Funeral Home in Burlington with Pastors Charlie Stoumbaugh and Jeff Hanson officiating. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery in Burlington. Visitation was held from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the funeral home on Monday. Memorials may be made in Ethel’s name to the Grace Manor Care Center in Burlington and may be left at the Bank of the West in Burlington.
